The landscape photography in this section spans over 40 years. Until 2007 all of the photographs were taken with film cameras. Originally I owned a Topcon 35 mm film camera before buying a Pentax Super A (film camera). I now use digital cameras (either a Pentax or Canon EOS). The clarity and detail in digital is exceptional. Below, the first photograph is taken using a film camera (Pentax). The negative was scanned and noise filters were applied. The subsequent photographs are digital, in which I have tried to recreate the original composition. Light, of course, plays the most important part. Light changes the mood and adds atmosphere. Some of my shots appear to be photographed while in the wilderness alone - however I frame the photograph to make it seem that way. |

Gibsons Beach, May 2015. Bad lensflare from cheap kit lens. Digital.The photo above was taken as the sun was setting. I set up the tripod in the water and used the limestone stack to block the sun. What appears to be a deserted scene is not the case, per the photos taken on the smart phone as we approached the scene to be photographed. The photo, left, was taken by Lee-Anne Raymond, who unofrtunately was using the camera with the kit lens it came with- resulting in the worst lens flaring I have ever seen. (That lens was replaced!) In Lee-Anne's shot you can see people on the far right who I had framed to be out-of-shot.

Me taking photograph at Gibsons Beach with incoming waveThe dawn shots involve getting up well before sunrise and getting to the destination, in this case Gibsons Beach, in the dark and climbing down Gibsons Steps - which are carved directly into the rock - in darkness. What kind of sunrise or cloud formations will greet you is all a matter of luck.
Despite the composition in these photographs being fairly similar, the lighting and clouds make significant changes to the resulting photograph. (With the exception of the first photograph of this row) these photos were taken before sunrise.

They involved getting into the city well before sunrise, hoping that the fog would still be there. These shots required very long exposures.
