The catalogue contains explanatory essays by both artists of their works. Each artist presents a brief summary of the history of surrealism which challenges conventional accounts as well as providing a summary of, or explanation behind, the creation of individual pieces. The whimsical works of Lee-Anne Raymond are counter-balanced by the more confrontational works of Demetrios Vakras. Both artists' works continue the "revolutionary" element that guided surrealism and challenge accepted convention and religion. The exhibition proved itself to be a disaster for both artists and resulted in the loss by both artists of their studio and home in 2014. Regarding the exhibition. The artists hired what had been advertised as a "gallery" to exhibit their work. It turned out not to be a gallery as it was never fit for purpose - the way the artists' work were presented runs contrary to how an art gallery should function. This was therefore a pseudo-gallery whose owner knew nothing about art nor about art theory and had never studied art. He objected to the meanings behind the works, all the while claiming their meaning was too complicated for him to understand. On the basis of his considerable shortcomings he attacked the integrity of both artists' works by posting disclaimers of liability and a large "WARNING!". Neither artist has painted since 2010 Each artist recounts their exhibition experince on their own websites The artists have a case against the Austrlian judicary's scandalous role in this affair. A Petition has been made to the Human Rights Commission in Geneva. The details of this petition and the case against Australia's judges can be found on redlegvartists.com |
